Mary Did You Know - Repost

I was driving in the car listening to Christmas music on the radio, and the song "Mary Did You Know" came on. A standard Christmas staple, I've heard the song for many years but today, for some reason, the words not only reached my ears but into my heart...the heart of a mother. The lyric that says, "And when you kiss your little baby, you've kissed the face of God" made me instantly think of my precious baby boy. I love kissing his face, chubby cheeks and all.

I wonder if Mary knew then, everything that was going to happen in her baby boy's life. She knew that he was going to be great and would do great things, how many other babies are welcomed by a choir of angels? But did she truly realize what Jesus would face in the end of his time on earth?

"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." (Luke 1:38)

This young mother would go from watching her beloved first-born child enter the world with great joy and peace, to watching her beloved first-born leave this world in agony and distress. As she watched his death, I imagine that her thoughts went back to the day he was born...holding her son in her arms, smelling his new baby smell, listening to him breathe. And now, all of her hope and love and life was up on a cross to die.

But it never did.

Jesus came back to life. Even in the midst of what she believed to be her greatest pain and suffering, that hope and love and life was now stronger than ever! Not only that, but it was also extended to the entire world. God had a bigger purpose for Jesus' life and death.

In the midst of your suffering, you can have hope and love and life...through Jesus Christ!! God sent His only Son to die so that our sins would be forgiven, so we would never be alone, and to know the meaning of unconditional love.

Mary didn't understand, but in her greatest loss, she received her greatest gift.

In whatever you are dealing with today, know that God has a purpose.

Busy Busy

"If you are feeling compelled to do so much that you are physically worn out, you may be driven instead of led. Remember, you have to come apart from a busy routine before you come apart yourself. You have to get away from everything before you come apart physically, mentally, and emotionally." -Joyce Meyer

This couldn't have come at a better time for me, especially in the midst of a crazy busy season. Many times, the things we call our "must-do's" are not truly essential, but are self-imposed. Take a break from the to-do list, from the running around, from trying to meet everyone's expectations (yours included), and find a place of balance and rest.

Hope In A Desert (Repost)

A previous post from my 31 Days Of Hope series...I needed a little kick-in-the-butt reminder today.

"So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up."
Galatians 6:9 NLT

Moses had things pretty good. He was a prince living in a palace in Egypt, he had a lot of power and influence, and had access to pretty much anything he wanted. One moment changed it all. God had a greater calling. What could be greater than living a life of royalty?

Living a life fulfilling your God-given purpose.

God had a different purpose for Moses' life. Moses went from the palace to the desert. There he met his future wife and began living out his new life working for his father-in-law. What a change of scenery! Definitely in humble circumstances, but that is exactly when God called him. Not when he was living the high life in the palace, but when he was faithfully working in the desert.

You can read about it in Exodus 3. Moses was tending to his father-in-law's flock when he sees a bush that is on fire yet not burning up. When Moses goes closer to investigate, God reveals Himself and gives Moses his marching orders (so to speak)...he was to go back to the land of Egypt and deliver the Israelites from the bondage of slavery. God was going to make him into a great leader, but not in the way Moses probably had envisioned it.

There was a purpose for the many years that Moses spent as a shepherd. He learned what it meant to work hard, which made him relatable to the people he would soon be leading. He learned how to survive in the desert, which would be helpful for the many years the Israelites would wander in the wilderness. God knew that it would take a special person to deliver His people from Egypt...a man of great character and experience. Those qualities don't come easy and don't come overnight.

Are you in a desert season of life? Be faithful where you are and with what you've been given. Let God use this time to mold you and shape you so that you can be ready when He calls you into your God-given purpose.

Failure

‎"I have learned that I will fail more than I succeed, but that failure is not fatal, nor in any way final. I will race time and again for the finish line only to stumble upon my own two feet and find myself with a face full of dirt.

By grace I will wake tomorrow and I will try it again."

Routine

It's very easy to get caught up in the mundane routine of the day to day. This was a very fitting reminder for me today as I realized I ran a whole dryer cycle with no clothes in it...

"Somehow or another, [we] feel the need to hurry through the grocery store, dash through the house cleaning, and rush through all the daily aspects of life that seem irrelevant to [our] faith. Don't begrudge the routine things of life; see every activity as an opportunity to serve God with your whole heart."

Waiting

Life passes by while we wait for "What If" and "As Soon As".
-Linda Anderson

I have dreams. I have goals. I have things I want to accomplish. But right now, I feel like I've got too much going on to actually pursue them, let alone reach them. Many people are right there too.

Waiting for the right time, the right circumstances, the right opportunity.

But sometimes, it doesn't come. And while we are waiting, life goes on. Granted, there are often times that we NEED to wait and we are called to wait. But many times, waiting can become an excuse to be lazy and stationary because we don't want to make the effort to do what it takes to move forward.

Where are you...moving or waiting? And if you are waiting, is it God-ordained or self-imposed?

What If We Loved?

I've been wrestling with some thoughts in my head. In recent years, "Christian" has increasingly been used alongside terms such as "hate", "condemning", and "judgmental". As with the Pharisees in the Bible, many Christians are quick to point out the faults and shortcomings of others while neglecting their own. I can speak from experience. But what if we did things differently?

What if we just loved people?

Instead of condemning them for their 'sins'.

Instead of judging those who are different.

Instead of belittling those who don't agree with us.

Regardless of who they are: prostitute, religious, athiest, liberal, conservative, homosexual, straight, rich, poor... we ALL are sinners. We ALL have issues. Even Jesus Himself said let him without sin cast the first stone. (Read John 8)

Does this mean we should never call people out? Not at all. But there is a proper time, place, and way to do it.

Does this mean we should not stand up or speak out for what we believe? Absolutely not! As believers in Christ, we must stand firm in our faith, our beliefs, and in our message. What is this message?

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
-John 3:16 (NIV)

But it doesn't stop there. If you keep reading into verse 17 it says this,
"For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him."

Jesus did not come to condemn the world, but to save it. Our message is that God LOVES us so much, that He sent His only Son to die for us. That we are forgiven. That we can have hope. Has this message been lost somewhere? Has condemnation overshadowed mercy?

What if we stepped out of our boxes? If we got involved in the lives of others, instead of being merely talking (or screaming) heads? What if our message was seen and not just heard?

The Joy Of Motherhood?

Motherhood. Some days, I just don't enjoy it.

(Cue the gasps, condemnation, dirty looks)

I LOVE my kids. I love them more than life itself. I couldn't ever imagine not being their mommy. But there are days that I am weary. There are days I want to scream. There are days, in between the monotony of cooking, cleaning, picking up, changing diapers, laundry, errands, appointments, housework, teaching, playing referee, so on and so forth, I find myself wondering, "Isn't there something more?"

My husband has an amazing heart and he has had some great opportunities to go and travel doing ministry and humanitarian work. When opportunities come my way, as much as I would love to take them, I turn them down, simply because I would have no one to take care of the kids 24-7 to pursue those things.

I don't mean to complain--ok, that's a lie, I do mean to complain--but pity party aside, I have to be honest with you and with myself. I am not supermom. And that is okay.

In Hebrews 4:15 it says, "This High Priest [Jesus] of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet He did not sin." (NLT)

God knows my heart and understands what I'm struggling with. Even though He has given me the gift of being a mom, He doesn't condemn me when I just want to run away for a few hours and not tell anyone where I am.

I realize that I may be opening up myself for criticism, but my hope is that in being transparent, I can encourage another mom out there who is feeling the same way. If you are a mom and feeling like you want to run away too, let me just encourage you to hang in there! On those tough days, go to God and pour your heart out to Him. Sounds overly religious, I know, but it honestly helps by being able to get it all out. What I'm saying is this- don't keep it inside or pretend that you've got it all together. You and I both know you don't. No one does. And that is okay.

Motherhood is not for the faint of heart. It is a HUGE calling, and even though it has many moments of brilliance and glory, there are times of frustration and discouragement too. But you aren't alone in those moments! Hang in there and BE FAITHFUL to what God has called you to. It's tough, but we got this! I'll finish this post the way the author finishes up Hebrews chapter 4, and I find it incredibly fitting...

"So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most." (NLT)

(Deep breath) Back at it...

God Is Bigger

I randomly woke up this morning with a children's praise song in my head called, "Our God is a Great Big God." Yes, this woman may need a break from being around kids all day, but funny enough, it is so appropriate for some things we are walking through right now.

As I was looking through Facebook last night, I was amazed at all the prayer requests that people had posted on their status. So many people are hurting. So many people are in need. But here's what I believe God wants to tell us today... "I am bigger."

God is bigger.

Whatever you are going through today, remember this scripture-- "You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world." (1 John 4:4).

Does that mean all your problems will magically go away? No. But God is bigger than hopelessness, bigger than anger, bigger than fear, bigger than worry, bigger than __________________.

God is bigger.

Walk By The Spirit

"If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit."
-Galatians 5:25

This verse has been on my mind the past few days. What I found interesting is that in the Greek translation, the word 'walk' in this verse means, "to proceed in a row as the march of a soldier." If we are daily listening for the Holy Spirit, He will direct us. We must take the time to pray and seek God to find our "marching orders", and then fall in line behind Him as He leads us.

Influence vs. Impact

In the day and age of social media, it's easy to get caught up in getting your name out there, how many people follow you, the amount of retweets you have, how many people read your blog, etc. You know, the ever-important platform. There's the common belief that the number of people who follow you shows how influential you are. And in many ways, that is true. But what's most important is not how MANY people you are "influencing" but HOW you are impacting those around you.

It is better to have a profound and eternal impact on a few, rather than have a superficial and non-eternal influence on the masses.

No matter who you are, you have influence, and I love seeing people use theirs in a positive way. But let's go beyond the game of who has the most influence and instead strive to make an impact for God's glory instead of our own.

Faithful

I want to be faithful.

I think there's a real lack of faithfulness today. It's something I struggle with on a daily basis. But I don't want my life to be one marked by many well-intentioned attempts but no "I'm going to see this through come hell or high water" follow-throughs.

I love writing, I love digging into God's Word, I love encouraging people. It's something I know God has put on my heart to do... a passion.

There are specific things that I KNOW God is calling me to, and because I want to be faithful to those things and to give myself completely to them, there are other things that, at the moment, I have to let go of. After a lot of prayer, I believe one of those things is writing on a daily basis. I will still write blog posts as God puts on my heart to do so.

I just want to say thank you for reading and all the encouragement I've received from your comments, messages, and feedback. What I love the most is being able to share life and what I'm walking through, knowing that I'm not alone in my thoughts, my experiences, and along this journey.

When Things Need To Change (Repost)

If you don't like something, change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it.
- Mary Engelbreit

Life can be frustrating. Last night, I was venting to my poor husband about the many things I am frustrated about right now. There are circumstances in my life and around me that I wish would/could change, yet they are beyond my control. But there are also circumstances in my life and around me that I wish would/could change, and I have all the power to make it happen.

For many of us, our issue doesn't come with RECOGNIZING what needs to change, but in IMPLEMENTING change itself.

My young daughter can get upset over the smallest things sometimes. In those instances, I tell her, "Don't get upset over something you can change." As I was venting last night, I realized that complaining was getting me nowhere in changing my circumstances. Instead, I need to take my frustration and use it to fuel me to make the right adjustments. For those things that are beyond my control, the thing I need to adjust is my attitude.

Look at the thing in your life that you are most unhappy about or that you tend to complain about the most, then find a way to change it. If it's something that you can't change yourself, then take it to prayer, ask God to change your perspective, and trust Him with the rest.

What Is True?

"Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things."
-Philippians 4:8

So many great reminders in this verse! But for this post, I want to focus on the part that reads, "Whatever is TRUE". So often we allow our emotions, our circumstances, other people's words and actions to rule in our minds.

We dwell on anything and everything BUT the truth.

Many times when we feel discouraged or defeated, it's because we are focusing on and believing things that simply aren't true. Satan is called "the father of lies" for a reason. He is a manipulater and a deceiver, and he knows exactly what thoughts to plant in our minds. It is our choice whether or not we are going to let those thoughts take root.

We must learn to think about what we are thinking about. To distinguish fact from fiction, reality from emotion, and truth from manipulation. THEN, we can focus our minds on those things that are indeed true.

God Is Our Anchor

"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure."
-Hebrews 6:19

I hate change. But ironically, my life over the past few years has been full of it. I like control and security. But ironically, my life over the past few years has been void of it. If you feel like life is tossing you about in the waves of a raging storm, cling to God as your steadfast anchor. He is hope in the midst of despair, peace in the midst of chaos, and a constant in the midst of change.

Letting Go

"Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain."
-Psalm 127:1 (NIV)

Sometimes we just have to let go. When there comes a point where God is telling us to lay down all of our building plans and tools and just walk away. It definitely isn't an easy thing to do, especially if it's something you really desire or something you've put blood, sweat, and tears into.

I'm not advocating quitting because you're tired, or things get too tough, or because giving up is the easy way out. I'm talking about those situations when GOD is telling you it's time. When God has been speaking to your heart and you know in your gut (whether you want to admit it or not), that it's time to let go. Ecclesiastes 3 reminds us that seasons change... it may be a dream, a desire, a relationship, a specific plan.

As hard as it may be, the beauty of answering God's call to let go of something is knowing that He is with you every step of the way. He will help you and strengthen you. And ultimately, God is wanting to move you on to something better.

Walking In Faith

"...for we walk by faith, not by sight."
-2 Corinthians 5:7

As I dropped my girl off for her first day of summer classes, she looked around the room to see if she saw any familiar faces. I knew that two of her close friends from school were going to be in her class, but they were not there yet. Extremely disappointed, my daughter turns around and says, "I thought my friends would be here." I tried to reassure her that they were probably on their way, but even as I talked to her, tears were welling up in her eyes.

I knew that her friends would be there... I saw the class roster and name tags outside the door, and even talked to one of the moms. But no amount of convincing would make my young daughter believe it unless she saw them with her own eyes.

How many times are we like that? Instead of believing God and taking Him at His word, we doubt. Instead of walking forward in confident faith, we grow discouraged and even angry, because we just don't "see" something happening. God is infinite and He sees so much more than we do. He knows the big picture.

Are you walking by faith or by sight?

Dwelling On The Past

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?"
-Isaiah 43:18-19

Learning from the past is wise. Dwelling on it is not. Don't be so focused on the past, that you miss the very thing that God is doing right before you.

Focus On The Prize

"Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win."
-1 Corinthians 9:24

When you watch runners compete in a close race, you will probably notice that towards the finish line, they put their heads down and run with all the strength and energy they have left. They aren't focused on anything else other than that finish line and, ultimately, the prize.

Many athletes will tell you that a smart competitor will know where his competition is at all times. And while it's good to know what's going on around them, if they become too focused on anything other than the finish line, they will lose their momentum. Think about it... if you are wanting to run your fastest, will you be faster if you are constantly looking from side to side, or if your focus is consistently at the finish?

What are you focusing on in your life right now? Are you looking back at the past? Are you distracted by the trials around you? Your race isn't over. Keep running. Dig deep beyond the pain, the weariness, the temptation to quit. Push through, keep your focus, and run the race to win.

Wherever You Go

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for
the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
-Joshua 1:9

Last week was a bit tough. After having a few things come up, I have been wrestling with feelings of fear, stress, doubt, and discouragement. I don't think it's a coincidence that our pastor is having us memorize this verse as we go through our current study.

In this verse, Moses had passed and Joshua was named as the next leader of the Israelites. In assuming this position, he would also be the one to lead the people into their long-awaited Promised Land. If you read in Numbers 13, you will see that Joshua was one of the spies who were first sent into the land, so he knew the dangers and difficulties that lie ahead. I'm sure when he saw the enormity of the task before him, he felt extremely overwhelmed.

When you look at the Hebrew translation for this verse, God was telling Joshua to not only be strong and courageous, but to not be afraid or distressed. The word 'dismayed' in Hebrew means to be broken down by something (i.e. fear, stress, worry). God knew the challenges that Joshua would face, but Joshua wasn't going to have to face them alone. Joshua could have confidence that no matter where He would go, God was with Him.

Are you feeling overwhelmed? Fearful? The same God that was with Joshua is also with you... wherever you go.

Beauty After The Storm

"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him."
-James 1:12 (NIV)

It had been a day full of nasty weather and severe storms. The final wave of thunderstorms was just passing as our family was out driving. I looked out the window and saw this...

The picture truly doesn't do it justice, it was an amazing sight. The sun had started to break though where the storm had passed and, in the midst of the dark clouds of the passing storm, it created a beautiful rainbow.

It was God's reminder to me that there can be beauty after a storm. That joy can come in the morning.

Going through trials is tough. It's hard to see past the storm clouds and it's easy to feel battered and worn down. But the storms of life will pass and, if you endure them, on the other side is where the beauty of that storm will be revealed.

Putting Up A Fight

My daughter was recently diagnosed with an ear infection. Typically no big deal but this was the third one in as many months. Since it's the same ear, her doctor thinks that it just has never fully healed, so she prescribed a stronger dose of antibiotics in hopes of kicking it for good. Unfortunately, my daughter hates the taste of the stuff and, last night, it was an all-out war to get her to take it. Pleading, kicking, screaming, fighting...it was awful!

Reasoning with her just didn't work. As much as I tried to tell her that it was for her best, or that if she didn't take it things would get worse, or that it would eventually help in her healing ...‎ in the mind of a child, all she knew was that she didn't like it and couldn't understand why Mommy and Daddy would force her to do something so "horrible".

Sometimes in life, God allows circumstances in our lives that we don't like. We become so focused on or consumed by how much we don't like the circumstance, that we can't simply trust God. Instead of pleading, kicking, screaming, or fighting, try to remember that He is in control and has your best interest in mind. Take your situation to prayer with an open mind and open heart. Sometimes what we initially believe to be so "horrible", may be the very things that God uses to bring us what we need the most.

God Alone (Repost)

Most of us would never acknowledge God as God alone if we didn't experience crisis when no one else could help.
-Beth Moore

God never intended us to walk through this life alone. But there will be times that you will FEEL alone. Maybe you feel like no one understands what you are going through. Maybe you feel that you have no one to talk to about your situation. Maybe you feel that you are beyond help. Let me tell you this--God is there. Wherever you are at, whatever you are going through...

God is there.

One of Satan's most common battle tactics is to get us isolated. To focus on ourselves and our problems and sink into that pit of self pity. We are then paralyzed and powerless. But you have God on your side! You don't have to face your problems alone.

"The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."
-Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)

I believe that sometimes God allows us to be put in situations to where we have no other choice but to rely on Him. Where you can't help but realize that He is the only One you need. Where you come to acknowledge Him as God and God alone.

In The Dark

Today's post is from the book "Just Enough Light for the Step I'm On" by Stormie O'Martian.

Often when we find ourselves in the midst of a dark situation, we immediately believe we must be out of the will of God. That might be true, but if we've been living in obedience to the Lord to the best of our ability, we are more likely right in the center of God's will.

In fact, God's will can lead us into some very dark circumstances. Oswald Chambers said, "Let it be understood that the darkness our Lord speaks of is not darkness caused by sin or disobedience, but rather darkness caused by excess light... Such times of darkness come as a discipline to the character and as the means of fuller knowledge of the Lord."

When we find ourself in the dark, we must STOP what we're doing, LOOK for His light, and LISTEN for His voice. If He is directing us, yet we ignore it, fail to see it, refuse to do it, run from it, don't comprehend it, or deliberately disobey it, we will be miserably lost.

We have to be still and know that He is God.

Faithful In The Now

"Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the LORD promised on oath to your forefathers."
-Deuteronomy 8:1 (NIV)

Do you have dreams, goals, aspirations? Do you feel that some of these are "on hold" in your life? There are several things I am anxiously waiting on to be fulfilled. Some days, I find myself getting impatient and frustrated by trying to figure out how to get from A to B to C.

On one of those anxious days, I was praying, seeking God's wisdom, and asking what my next step should be. I was tired of feeling like I was at a standstill! Instead of a blueprint for the future, I felt God say to me...

"Be faithful with what you are called to now."

Yes, I have dreams, goals, desires. But if I cannot be faithful with the things God has given to me right now, how can I expect to be given more? Jesus even talks about this principle in Luke 16 when he says, "Whosoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much..."

Every day is a step closer to your dreams fulfilled and your goals achieved. Don't live so much in the future that you neglect the present. Continue to be faithful in the today, with the things God has called you to TODAY. Allow Him to use where you are to teach you and prepare you for what's ahead.

Who Are You Listening To?

"A wise man will hear and increase in learning, And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel..."
-Proverbs 1:5

Note that it doesn't say that a man of understanding will acquire thoughts or opinions. Nor does it say that he will acquire simply counsel. But a man of understanding will acquire WISE counsel. In a day and age where people are ever more free and comfortable to share their thoughts and opinions, we must be careful about who we are letting speak into our lives.

When making a decision, especially a major decision, it is vital that we know who and what we are being influenced by. If you are a Christian, these decisions should be weighed against two things... the Word of God and your spiritual discernment.

It's good to seek advice and counsel. In fact, Proverbs 15:22 tells us that plans fail due to lack of counsel. However, make sure the counsel you receive is more than just someone's thoughts or opinions.

Who are you listening to?

Say Thank You

This last week, a friend of ours passed away from cancer. As condolences came in via the internet, many people were saying how thankful they were to have had him as part of their lives... Some wrote about life lessons he taught them, others would write about cherished memories, and some shared the practical things they learned from him.

We all have people in our lives who mean a great deal to us. Those who have been there through thick and thin. Those who have helped us, prayed for us, encouraged us. Those who have taught us both practical and life lessons. Those who have simply lived life with us.

Today, my challenge is simply this: thank someone. Tell at least one person how grateful you are for them. And don't just merely say thank you, but tell them WHY you are thankful for them.

Let's not wait until they are no longer there that say how much we appreciate them.

Facing Your Battles

"It's not the size of the man in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the man."
-Unknown

I was sitting outside with my family tonight, when I heard some birds making a bunch of noise. I looked up and saw one bird attacking another. One of the birds was noticeably larger than the other, yet it was the smaller bird that was being the aggressor. The large bird had come too close to the other's nest, and that little bird was going to do everything it could to win this battle.

What was intriguing is that the little bird was successful at chasing away it's attacker. In the end, what the small bird lacked in size and strength, he made up for in fight and determination.

You may be facing an uphill battle. A situation where you are in way over your head. A circumstance where you feel your back is against a wall. There are countless stories in the Bible that tell of people who faced similar difficult situations. But despite their seemingly impossible circumstances, they faced them head on, with strength and determination, knowing that God was with them in their battles.

They never ran away or denied that there were obstacles, but they saw those obstacles in the light of having an all-powerful God on their side.

Difficulty Can Be A Good Thing

Today's post is an excerpt from one of the devotions in my Women's Devotional Bible. Note: it doesn't just apply to women.

Sometimes, the things God promises for our future don't seem at all likely in light of what we're experiencing today. From our limited perspective, we don't see the big picture, only a tiny thumbnail print. We may be experiencing something difficult or uncomfortable that will result in something better.

It's important to remember that sometimes our troubles are only a momentary detour leading us to God's best for us.

Take Courage!

"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
-John 16:33

This weekend, some friends of ours received some devastating news for their family. So many people are facing huge battles and experiencing great suffering.

As Christians, we are not exempt from hardships. Jesus told His disciples to expect them. But then He encouraged them to take heart. In the Greek it is translated, "take courage".

I wish I knew all the reasons why. I wish I had all the answers to the tough questions. But I don't.

All I DO know is that life is not always perfect and we will all face moments we wish we would never have to face. But I also know that, even as we walk through those moments, God will be with us. Take courage, knowing that in the end, He will overcome.

Waves Of Life

"Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea--the LORD on high is mighty."
-Psalm 93:4

Have you ever been standing in the ocean, facing the beach, only for a rogue wave to come up behind you and knock you off your feet? You try to get back up and get your bearings, only to be knocked back down by another wave.

Doesn't life feel that way sometimes? We get hit by a wave that makes us lose our footing and every time we try to get back up, another wave comes to try and knock us back down...one thing after another after another. It can eventually get wearisome to even try to get back on our feet.

But keep fighting, keep pushing, keep getting back up...knowing that God is mightier than the waves we face.

Big Faith Or Big Doubt?

And the Lord said, "If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and be planted in the sea'; and it would obey you."
-Luke 17:6

Jesus told his disciples that having even a small amount of faith can accomplish great things. Similarly, having a small amount of doubt can impede great things. All of us experience doubt, but it's when we allow that doubt to overcome our faith, that we limit ourselves and hinder the work that God wants to do in us and through us.

Which is bigger in your life right now: faith or doubt?

Going Beyond Thank You

My dear friend, herself the wife to a US soldier, posted this on Facebook and I felt it was such a great reminder in the midst of everything else going on this holiday...

"Lots of people are posting celebratory updates about the upcoming long weekend. Please remember the purpose of memorial day. This year I remember the fallen, the broken, and those still in the battle.... Every day is memorial day."

So I want to encourage you, wherever you live, find a way to honor those who have served and sacrificed for this country. Maybe do something for a family who has lost a loved one in the service. Write a thank you card. Many places hold Memorial Day services that are open to the public.

No matter your stance on war or politics or whatever, people gave their lives so that you could have the freedoms you have today.

Remember what this day is about.

Try to go beyond just the simple "thank you" posting on Facebook or Twitter. These men, women, and their families deserve more than just one holiday, but let's do our best to honor them today.

Give Hope (Repost)

We are living in very discouraging times. People are facing seemingly hopeless situations in their lives today. People are struggling. Many are at a point where they want to give up. And just maybe you are one of them.

In Christ, there is hope...hope for change, hope for healing, hope for restoration, hope for a better tomorrow.

As Christians we carry the HOPE of Christ!!

We are His hands and His feet, the vessels that He chooses to use to show others how much He loves them. We are (or should be) THE voice of hope to hurting and hopeless people.

I challenge you to go out and be a source of hope today. Take time to pray and ask God to put someone on your heart who needs to hear from Him. Pray that God would put people in your path who need to be encouraged. It may be someone you know or a complete stranger. And don't just pray for them but DO SOMETHING to physically show them the love and hope that Christ is truly about.

I know a lot of you are dealing with your own stuff and are in need of an extra dose of hope yourself! My challenge to you today is to rise above your own trials and share hope with someone else who needs it as much as (or maybe even more than) you do.

I end with a scripture in Romans, and this is my prayer for you today...

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Romans 15:13

Have Faith

Today's post is from "Praying God's Word" by Beth Moore. It ministered so much to me yesterday, I wanted to share it with you...

Faith is the only thing that will ever close the gap between our theology and our reality.

Father, You've told me that when I ask I am to believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave tossed by the wind (James 1:6). You said to Your children, "If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all" (Isaiah 7:9). Please teach me to stand firm, Lord.

Christ Jesus, before You rebuked the winds and the waves, You asked Your disciples, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" (Matt. 8:26). Help me to fully embrace that the One whom the winds and waves obey is the same One who watches over me. Help me to not hinder Your works on my behalf over a lack of faith.

Not If, But When

But now, thus says the LORD, your Creator, O Jacob,
And He who formed you, O Israel,
"Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name; you are Mine!
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
And through the rivers,
they will not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be scorched,
nor will the flame burn you.
For I am the LORD your God,
The Holy One of Israel, your Savior;"
-Isaiah 43:1-3

Notice that it doesn't say IF you pass through the waters, or IF you walk through the fire. It says WHEN. Difficult times are inevitable. And WHEN we walk through them, God is there to walk through them with us.

What Are You Thankful For?

"...in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
-1 Thessalonians 5:18

It is God's will that we are to give thanks. And not just to simply give thanks, but to give thanks IN EVERYTHING.

I know that we all face tough circumstances on a daily basis. There are things that some people are dealing with right now that are unimaginable. But despite what you and I are going through, we all can find something to be thankful for. Look around you. It may be for something big or something small. It might be for something practical or extraordinary. You can even thank God for the trial you are going through, knowing that He can bring good out of it.

So here is the challenge. I am challenging you to not only think about something you are thankful for, but actually write it down, where you can visually see it. Comment here, post it on Facebook or Twitter, write it in a journal... just write what you are thankful for. There is power in a grateful heart. It can change your attitude, your perspective, and even your circumstances. It also can have a great impact on those around you.

Too often, we do not verbalize those things we are thankful for. So here's your chance...

What are you thankful for?

There's Only One You

The following is an excerpt from Jon Acuff's blog. This totally smacked me in the face. For those who have dreams you are pursuing, it can be easy to get caught up in emulating people you look up to and completely ignore that God created you for a purpose that only you were meant to fulfill.

When you’ve got a dream, it’s easy to find someone who succeeded at something similar and believe that is your only path to success. We often discount our own dreams or talents as we try to emulate someone we think has “real talent.” Our particular gifts “don’t count.” So we shove them aside and are tempted to become someone else even as we chase our dream. But here’s the thing:

We only need one Tim Ferriss.

We only need one Andy Stanley.

We only need one Seth Godin.

And it turns out, those positions on the planet are already filled. Gloriously so I might add. We don’t need another Tim Ferriss. We’ve already got that. We’ve already got everyone else, but you. We are short one you. We need you. We need your dream, in your unique way, with your unique thumbprint.

So learn from your heroes. Be inspired by your heroes. But be careful you don’t take steps away who you’ve been called to be and become someone you’re not.

Emotions Can Be Deceiving

"The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; Who can understand it?"
-Jeremiah 17:9

I am currently trying to navigate a situation where my emotions have been running pretty high. As I was venting to my husband the other night about what I wanted to say and how I wanted to handle it, he told me, "Why don't you just wait a few days, let your emotions settle down, and pray about how GOD wants you to handle it."

What great wisdom there was in that! I always try to remind myself to not make decisions based off of my emotions, but when you are in the midst of the situation, it can be hard to remember.

Emotions can be deceived, manipulated, and easily provoked. They are not to be trusted as the authority in our lives.

Do not confuse your emotions for the Holy Spirit. God created us with emotions, but we are not to be RULED by them.

Pray Instead of Worry

"Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all He has done.

Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."

-Philippians 4:6-7

Generation Gap

Something I have been noticing lately is that there seems to be a pretty big gap when it comes to generational relationships, especially in the Christian church. Older people tend to look at the younger thinking they are foolish because the younger generation don't follow the same order and structure that they did. The younger ones, in turn, think the older ones are just completely 'out of touch' with the way the world is today.

There are vast differences in the generations represented in this day and time. But there is so much we can all learn from each other if we simply open our minds and take the time to listen.

The Weed Of Bitterness

"Hurt leads to bitterness, bitterness to anger; travel too far that road and the way is lost."
-Terry Brooks

Bitterness is like a weed. It usually starts as pain or hurt that is unresolved. Instead of letting go and making a choice to forgive or move on, you hold onto that pain. Sometimes that holding on is unintentional. But many times, we choose to hold onto it. And before we know it, that small seed of hurt has taken root and grown into bitterness and resentment.

Nothing good ever comes from bitterness. It takes the sweetness out of life.

A weed starts out harmless enough, but if left alone, it slowly grows and invades the area where it has taken root. It steals the soil's nutrients from the plants around it, so it becomes stronger and chokes out the beautiful flowers and plants that are around it.

Likewise, once that seed of hurt has been planted in your heart, if left alone, it will take root and slowly grow into a weed of bitterness. It will steal your joy and rob you of the ability to see or appreciate the beautiful moments in your life. And eventually, it will consume you.

Get to the root of the issue and find the source. Take it to God, forgive, let go. Life is too short to hold on to bitterness.

Beyond Our Control

Being so young (and a girl), it's easy for my daughter to get caught up in very minor things. Most of them are just part of life and simply out of her control. I find myself many times telling her, "Honey, I know you are upset, but there's no use crying over something beyond your control."

Today was one of those days for me. It started off waking up to a child with pinkeye, and ended with our friend having to cancel watching our kids for a date night with my husband. Minor as these things may be, it's still frustrating when things don't go the way you expect them to.

We all face circumstances of life that are beyond our control. Many of those circumstances are tough to deal with and definitely give us just cause to be upset. But we can't let these times consume us. We can't let them break us. Instead, take them to God, leave them in His hands, and walk away. Instead of focusing your time and energy on the things you can't change, focus on the things you CAN.

God Knows You

The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who take refuge in Him.
-Nahum 1:7

If you feel like there's no one who you can trust or no one who understands what you are going through--God does. It says that He KNOWS those who take refuge in Him. The word 'knows' in Hebrew means an experiential knowledge. It's deeper than a superficial acquaintance.

God knows you inside and out.

He knows exactly what you are feeling and what you are facing. As you walk through the craziness that life can bring, rest in knowing that God sees you, knows you, and loves you. He is your stronghold. Take refuge in Him.

Remember What God Has Done

Remembering what God has done in the past spills over into believing God for our future.
-Beth Moore

I've always found it crazy how quickly, and how often, the Israelites forgot the things God had done for them. When God sent Moses to deliver the Israelites from Egypt, He sent plagues, He led them through the wilderness by a cloud and by fire, and the biggest yet, parted the Red Sea so that they could cross over on dry land! Yet even despite these miraculous events, the Israelites still had a problem with trusting God.

Crazy right? Yet how many times has that been true in my life? More times than I care to admit. Even when finances have been tight for our family, God has always come through for us. He has always taken care of us. So why do I still stress out if/when the end of the month rolls around and we seem to be a bit short? God has given me promises in His word. But instead of believing God's word when facing an seemingly impossible situation, I believe what circumstances appear to be.

In the Bible, when God did something great and profound in someone's life, they would often build an altar. This altar would serve not only as a testimony, but also as a reminder for what God had done. Maybe we need to do the same. Someone once gave me a great idea--to start a testimony journal. Whenever God answers a prayer, write it down. When God meets a need, write it down. When God speaks a word of encouragement to you, write it down. Then when circumstances come that tempt you to doubt or fear, go back to that journal and remember what God has done!

Wisdom and Discernment

"The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer."
-1 Peter 4:7

I am a firm believer that Jesus is coming back. That time is drawing closer with each day that goes by. The Bible is clear that in the last days, there will be quite a bit of chaos. In addition to the increase of wars and natural disasters, people will fall away from their faith and many will be led astray by false doctrines and teachings.

As Christians, it is vital that we really know the Word of God and use the wisdom and discernment that He provides to us.

When Peter tells us to use sound judgment, the Greek word used is Sophroneo, and it means to be self-controlled, moderate as to opinion or passion. When things get tough, we need to do our best to not give in to assumptions, opinions, or even emotions, but to be grounded in God's truth. We all know that we can't believe everything that is told to us via media, so this is where the importance of knowing Scripture comes in. By knowing God's Word, we always have something to compare and judge things against. Even beyond that, there is so much invaluable WISDOM throughout the Bible.

Secondly, Peter tells us to be sober in spirit, and in the Greek that means to be calm and collected in spirit. When you accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior, God gives you the Holy Spirit...a guide, instructor, and helper. When there is chaos surrounding us, we must not react, but instead take the Word of God and the wisdom He gives us, and use that together with the Holy Spirit to respond the way He leads us to. Using DISCERNMENT.

I am so thankful for the tools that God gives us to navigate life. I am thankful that in the midst of all the craziness and chaos that this world can bring, God is always there, that He is steadfast, and that He will never leave me.

Be Sober

"The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins."
-1 Peter 4:7-8

Worship God

Worship is a vital part of our Christian walk. For me, it's a way of escaping whatever I'm dealing with and remembering that God loves me and is in control over my life. It places my focus on Him above anything else, including myself. It gives me the opportunity to give Him thanks and glory for all He has done.

For the month of April, as we celebrate Easter, I am challenging you to set aside time each day to put on a song and simply worship. Sit down, quiet your mind, and really listen to the song. Let the words sink in, let them minister to your heart. Worship God for what He has done and for Who He is...

because He is worthy.

Recalled

"Our callings remain a hope until we allow our eyes of our hearts to be enlightened and choose to accept them."
-Beth Moore

For a long time, I believed God had a specific call on my life. Yet due to my own laziness, disobedience, and just life happening, I never pursued it. I thought about it, and even took some baby steps forward, but never went after it with whole-hearted abandon. As a result, I thought that calling was void and a great opportunity had passed me by.

re·call
to call back; ask or order to return

I am sensing a renewal. I am feeling that my name as been recalled.

The Bible is filled with stories of mistakes, failures, and missed opportunities. But the Bible is also filled with many stories of redemption, renewal, and second chances.

So here I am again. I am feeling God leading me in a certain direction and, this time, I am throwing my hat over the fence so that I have no choice but to go for it. As I look ahead, it's almost overwhelming. I know it's going to take a lot of hard work and overcoming some hurdles, but I know that as I walk in obedience, one step at a time, God will meet me and allow the eyes of my heart to be enlightened.

What about you? Is there a missed opportunity that God may be bringing back around? Are you ready to throw your hat over the fence?

Webs Of Worry

Today's post is from the book "Jesus Calling." I love the analogy about weaving webs, because worry is something that keeps many of us in bondage. I have been there so many times... Entangled. Unable to move. Paralyzed. Worry shows us that we are more focused on the problem than we are on God.

Stop worrying long enough to hear My voice. I speak softly to you, in the depths of your being. Your mind shuttles back and forth, hither and yon, weaving webs of anxious confusion. As My thoughts rise up within you, they become entangled in those sticky webs of worry. Thus, My voice is muffled, and you hear only "white noise".

Ask My Spirit to quiet your mind so that you can think My thoughts. This ability is an awesome benefit of being My child, patterned after My own image. Do not be deafened by the noise of the world or that of your own thinking. Instead, be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Sit quietly in My presence, letting My thoughts reprogram your thinking.

Psalm 24:8

"Who is the King of Glory?
The Lord strong and mighty.
The Lord, mighty in battle."
-Psalm 24:8

Today, I felt led to simply share this verse from Psalms.

Whatever battle you are facing, know that the Lord is with you. He is mighty. He is stronger than anything you will face. In Him and through Him, we have victory.

God's Word

"For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
-Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)

I was unable to make it to church yesterday, so I attended church online via Valley Bible Fellowship. The pastor who was speaking, Jim Crews, is a good friend of ours and he was talking about the importance of filling our minds and hearts with the right things. One of those things is the Word of God. Duh, right? But in all reality, how much Word really penetrates our lives?

Reading the Bible is truly a blessing we have in this country, many others around the world do not have this privilege. And while reading the Word is vital to the Christian walk, do we go beyond simply reading words on a page? Do we go beyond study and devotions?

Do we really let the words of Scripture take root in our hearts and minds?

The Bible is full of amazing passages and stories that will encourage you, challenge you, guide you... I know that God has used His Word to speak to me too many times to count. What are you going through right now? Let me challenge you to find a scripture that will speak to you and/or your circumstances (many Bibles have a topical index in the back). Then take the time to memorize it. Once you have that allowed that word to penetrate your heart and your mind, whenever you need it, it will be there.

For example, God has given me several words from the Bible as we have been navigating this crazy season of life. Whenever I am struggling with doubt or discouragement, I can simply recite that scripture to myself and let it remind me of the promises God has given me and help me change the thoughts and attitude of my heart.

There are so many benefits to knowing the Word of God. But one of the most important is that God SPEAKS THROUGH it. The Word of God truly is living and powerful.

Follow The Peace

Charlie was a spiritual mentor in my life for many years. To nearly everyone that knew him, he was a spiritual giant of sorts. He was like Yoda, always seeming to have a nugget of wisdom for nearly any situation. One of the things he would tell me whenever I was facing a tough decision was "Follow the peace". Pray about your decision, find where the peace of God leads you, then follow it.

In Joyce Meyer's "Starting Your Day Right" she writes, "You may have to step out to find out the right thing to do. If you don't hear clearly from God, just step in the direction you think you should go, and then wait for peace. If you lose your peace, back out of wherever you were headed."

My husband and I recently faced a big decision and everything in us wanted to say yes, but regardless of what we felt or wanted, God's peace just wasn't there. As tough as it was to turn it down, we knew it was the right choice. God was leading us in a different direction.

Philippians 4:7 tells us that the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. You see, God's peace is different that our desires or emotions or thoughts. It's deeper than any human understanding.

Where is the peace of God leading you?

Real Authenticity

"Deep down, I want to be Velveteen-Rabbit real: threadbare and worn, and loved even more for it."

This statement in Alece Ronzino's blog post about her love/hate relationship with authenticity struck a chord with me.

“Being real” is a term that is thrown out there all the time. People say how much they admire when someone is "being real". Especially in the church world, where being a hypocrite is a cardinal sin, authenticity is embraced and “fake” Christianity is despised.

But when people begin to get deep with their authenticity, others run from it. I've been guilty of it. Sure, share your prayer requests and struggles, we are supposed to bear one another's burdens, right? But whatever you do, please don't show any kind of emotion or get too deep on me because that might get awkward. I may even have to avoid your phone calls or pretend I don't see you at church.

I know for some of us, it's a lot easier said than done. But we can ask God to help us have a heart for the burdens of others. Sometimes all people need is for someone to just be there, instead of running away. If we truly value "being real" then lets allow people the opportunity to BE real.

God's Faithful Promises

"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful."
-Hebrews 10:23

I was talking with a dear friend of mine yesterday and she was updating me on some really tough circumstances her family has been dealing with. After many tears, setbacks, and prayers, they finally received some good news about their situation. Yet even with the good news, there was still some doubt...was God really going to come through for them?

I can totally relate, can you? God has spoken something to you. You believe. Hardships come to test your belief. You feel disappointed. Some of us have been on this merry-go-round for what seems like an eternity. So much so, that you feel almost scared to hope for fear of being disappointed yet again.

"If we have faith, we have hope."
-Charles Spurgeon

If we BELIEVE in God, then we must believe IN God. We must believe that He is who the Word says He is. That He can do what He says He can do. We must continue to put our hope in Him, even if things don't work out the way we would desire them to. Because He promises that His grace is sufficient. He promises to never leave us. He promises to love us unconditionally. And He who promised, is faithful.

The Blessings Of Today

"He that fears not the future may enjoy the present."
-Thomas Fuller

It has been a wonderful weekend... great weather, lots of laughter, lots of quality family time. Yet instead of cherishing all of that 'wonderful-ness' in my heart, I am anticipating the week to come, and my heart is filled with dread. This week, our family begins another season of craziness, and to be honest, I'm not looking forward to it at all.

"Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes."
-Matthew 6:34 (MSG)

Why do I struggle with that so much? Instead of looking at the negative, I need to rejoice at the positive! I have a lot to be thankful for, but in being anxious, I am robbing myself of enjoying God's blessings in my life. If you are having a hard time finding positivity in your life right now, maybe it's because you are so focused on the negative that you are robbing yourself of not only seeing God's blessings, but enjoying them.

I have many blessings. I have a lot to be thankful for. God is good.

My heart is full.

What Goes Around Comes Around

"Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days, you will find it again."
-Ecclesiastes 11:1

Being involved in ministry for so many years, I have had the great honor of "leading" a lot of pretty amazing people. From the nursery to young adults, you name it and I have been involved. I don't say that to brag, but to express how truly humbled and grateful I am that God allowed me those opportunities to speak into people's lives. But what I truly consider one of the greatest things about my years in ministry is when it all comes back around.

I've been walking through a tough season in life. There have been some high points, but also many low points. It's been in those valleys where God has been using some of those people who I invested in to pray for me, encourage me, and speak His truth into my life. What I used to pour into them, they are now pouring into me. The students have become the teachers.

As Christ followers, we all need to be pouring into someone on a daily basis. Who are you pouring into? You never know...what you give to them today may be given to you tomorrow.

Seeing Treasures

My daughter was playing outside when she suddenly comes running into the house shouting, "Mommy, Mommy!" Seeing that she was okay and obviously excited, I asked her what was going on. "Look Mommy! I found a TREASURE!" I looked down to see her clutching a small freshly picked flower in her pudgy little hand. Some people would look and that and think, "aaand...?" No big deal right?

My daughter loves flowers. She especially loves to collect them. Not only that, but she had been through a whole winter season without any flowers, so to her, this was truly a treasure.

Where did we lose that as we grew into adults? How many everyday treasures do we miss? Maybe we are too busy to see them, are too consumed looking at other things to notice, or don't recognize them for what they are truly worth. There are treasures all around us, but it's all a matter of seeing them as such. I pray that God will open our eyes, that we may see the extraordinary in the (seemingly) ordinary.

Keeping The Fast

We are currently in the season of Lent and many people are fasting. The first part of the fast can be extremely difficult, and often the hardest time. I want to encourage you to persevere in the thing(s) that you feel God has called you to give up for Lent.

Be prepared for the spiritual attacks in these days you are fasting. The enemy will try to tempt you, distract you, and discourage you. The Bible reminds us that satan is a thief who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Don't let him rob you of the things God wants to do in you and through you during your fast.

If you are feeling weary, remember the reason for your fast. Draw even closer to God and ask Him for strength and endurance. Push through the temptation to give in and, instead, move forward towards the transformation that God wants to do in you.

A House Divided

There's an old song that we used to sing in Children's Church that said, "They will know we are Christians by our love..." Unfortunately, many of today's Christians are viewed as judgmental, negative, and prideful. And most of that perception is based on how we treat each other.

Christians are notorious for "shooting the wounded". When a brother or sister falls, instead of loving them, many fellow Christians tend to judge them. Instead of helping them back up and on their feet, we hold their actions over their head, keeping them in a state of defeat. We are so concerned with the minors and trying to keep fellow Christians "in line" that we are completely neglecting one of our primary purposes as believers...TO SAVE THOSE WHO ARE LOST.

"If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand."
-Mark 3:25

I love the way that the New Living Translation says it, "A family splintered by feuding will fall apart." The arguing and backbiting among the Church causes splinters of division that will slowly lead to a broken and weakened body. Don't you think that's exactly where the enemy wants us? There are people who desperately need God's message of hope, peace, and forgiveness! But if we are constantly focusing on other believers, pointing out ways they could live their lives better, how will we have the time and energy to go and seek out the lost? Beyond that, how can we tell them about Christ's love when our actions towards those in our own Church family show the exact opposite?

While we ARE to hold each other accountable, we shouldn't major in the minors. We shouldn't look at fellow Christians with a microscope, but rather through the lens of God's grace, mercy, and love.

When Things Need To Change

If you don't like something, change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it.
- Mary Engelbreit

Life can be frustrating. Last night, I was venting to my husband about the many things I am frustrated about right now.

Look at the thing in your life that you are most unhappy about or that you tend to complain about the most, then (prayerfully) find a way to change it. If it's something that you can't change yourself, then take it to prayer, ask God to change your perspective, and trust Him with the rest.

A Post On Lent - Focus On The Purpose

Yesterday was the beginning of Lent, and many are participating by fasting something for 40 days. For some, it may be a certain type of food or drink. For others, it might be something that consumes their time, such as TV or internet. If you are fasting as part of Lent, I want to encourage you to keep your focus on the purpose of fasting. A fast is not to make us religious. A fast is not to make us more spiritual than others. A fast is not to call attention to ourselves.

I read a great take on the purpose of fasting by Joel J. Miller this week...

"Fasting denies the flesh and its desires. But why? For the express purpose of better enabling us to put on Christ, to grow in Christ, to become more like Christ. Fasting is a means to an end. We deny ourselves to transform ourselves."

When you fast, you are giving something up. But whatever you give up, you must replace it with God. In place of the time you would be devoting to whatever it is you are fasting, spend time in prayer, worship, reading the Word. As you draw closer to God, He will draw closer to you (James 4:8). Listen for God to speak to you and allow God to transform you.

God Alone

The Lord Is Our Shepherd

"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul..."
-Psalm 23:1-3

Psalm 23 was written by King David. Before he became a king, he lived his life as a shepherd. If anyone knew the responsibilities of that job, it would be him. David knew that a shepherd's main objective was to take care of his sheep. In doing so, a shepherd leads his sheep where they need to go...places where they can find food and water, where they can find safety, where they can find rest.

As the psalm says, The Lord is OUR Shepherd. He is there to take care of us. He is there to lead and guide us.

I love the serene picture that David paints...green pastures, quiet waters...it almost relaxes me just reading about it. I don't know about you, but I could definitely go for some peaceful surroundings right now! The good news is that God, as our Shepherd, wants to lead us there.

Right now, your life may not even come close to resembling the beauty and serenity of that picture. But even in the midst of turmoil and chaos and busyness, we can (and must) take a break, quiet our minds and our hearts, and let God lead us to the green pastures of His word and the refreshing water of the Holy Spirit.

When we allow ourselves to be cared for by our loving Shepherd, we will find peace, rest, and restoration.

Blessed Be The Name Of The Lord

"Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the LORD,
I will be joyful in God my Savior."
-Habakkuk 3:17-18

This week has been rough. My kids were sick and my husband was gone. Nothing was going right. I was exhausted physically, mentally, and spiritually. To top everything off, I had to rush my son to the ER in the middle of the night because he started having trouble breathing. Praise the Lord, he is ok and my family is all back together safe and sound.

But I remember driving home from the hospital in the dark early morning hours praying, "God, where are You in this? When will this season of difficulty be over?" No sooner had I spoken those words, the song "Blessed Be Your Name" pops into my head.

Part of that song is taken from Job chapter 1. After Job lost nearly everything he had (in very tragic circumstances at that), it says he "fell to the ground in worship and said, 'Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.'”

This doesn't mean that Job was naturally joyful or happy about his circumstances. In fact, we see that he experienced all the human emotions of great loss...grief, anger, confusion. Yet even though Job didn't understand what was going on, even though he didn't see God in his circumstances, even though he questioned God...in the midst of his darkest hour...he KNEW that God was still worthy of his praise.

Talent Envy

"For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us."
-Romans 12:4-6

You are unique. God created you with a purpose in mind. He gave you specific talents and giftings. So why do we feel the need to compare ourselves to others? I'm not talking about 'keeping up with the Joneses,' I'm talking about ministry. Working in ministry for many years, one thing I consistently heard is "I want to be a pastor." As if that was God's highest calling in life. Being a pastor is an incredible calling...but it's exactly that--a calling, for specific people. It's not "better" than anything else. But for some reason, we as Christ-followers seem to be so focused on wishing we had other people's "better" gifts and talents, that we neglect our own.

I love the way the New Living Translation translates verse 6...
"In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well."

There are so many wonderful gifts listed in the Bible: encouragement, serving, teaching, to name a few. All of them are important and needed in the body of Christ. My challenge to you: do not focus on the gifts and talents you don't have or wish you had more of, but embrace the ones that God has given you. And not only embrace them, but work to grow and strengthen them. God gave them to you for a purpose...use them for His kingdom and for His glory.

Praying God's Word - Purify My Heart

Today's post is from Beth Moore's book, "Praying God's Word Day By Day". Are you in a desert season? Maybe God is testing your heart...

Any 'No' an earnestly seeking child of God receives from the throne is for the sake of a greater 'Yes'.

Father, help me to remember in my impatience that the end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride (Ecc. 7:8).

You led your children, the Israelites, all the way in the desert for forty years, to humble them and to test them in order to know what was in their hearts, whether or not they would keep Your commands (Deut. 8:2).

Help me to understand that sometimes You lead me on certain paths to humble me also, to see what is in my heart.

Purify my heart, Lord, so that I will be patient in the waiting times, and so that You will take joy in what You find.

Guilt-Trippin'

If all you do is pour on the guilt, you could very well drown him in it. My counsel now is to pour on the love.
- Corinthians 2:7-8 (MSG)

We've all done it. Someone has forgotten an important occasion, didn't live up to expectations, made a mistake...and we made sure they knew about it. Instead of addressing the matter in a mature Biblical way, we decided to give them the silent treatment, read them a laundry list of all their past mistakes, or go into a self-pity act. Not you? Have you ever been mad at someone, they ask you what's wrong, you reply with a curt "nothing"? Ah yes, I thought so!

Guilt-trips aren't a God-response but rather a flesh-response. They are a way of trying to control and manipulate. Why do we do it? Many times it's because we feel a lack of control over something in our OWN lives so we react by trying to control someone else's.

The Bible says that we ALL fall short of the glory of God...and yes, that would include me and you.

Let's try to remember that the next time our emotions want to get the better of us. There are times when people must be called out. There are times when your emotions are completely justified. There are times when God will use you to bring CONVICTION (not guilt). Ask God to show you how He wants you to handle the situation. It may not bring satisfaction to your flesh but it will give you victory over it.

Arguing With God

Have you ever found yourself questioning God? I mean, I know that God's ways and reasons are far above my own, but sometimes I just can't help but think, "God, what the heck are You doing?" Or, "This makes absolutely no sense God." Can you relate?

Today I had one of those moments. We got some disappointing news about something we've been earnestly praying about for a long time. What made it worse, is that I was actually feeling pretty hopeful that this would be the answer to prayer we've been seeking. For me, it was one more closed door and I felt like someone just punched me in the stomach. Now, not to sound over-spiritual or anything, I've been pretty positive and hopeful recently. But this news started me on the familiar trail that begins as disappointment and slowly descends to the valley of doubt and discouragement. So imagine my reaction when I go to get in the Word today and this is staring me in the face...

"What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’"

Oh, but it gets even better...

"This is what the Lord says— the Holy One of Israel and your Creator: 'Do you question what I do for my children? Do you give me orders about the work of my hands? I am the one who made the earth and created people to live on it. With my hands I stretched out the heavens. All the stars are at my command.'" (Isaiah 45:9-12 NLT)

God knows everything. His wisdom and knowledge, no one can fathom. Me? I'm doing pretty good if I can find my car keys in the morning. Who am I to question the One who created the universe? The One who commands everything into being?

Yes Lord, point well taken.

Be Still

Life is crazy! And not just for me, but for a lot of you as well. There are so many things that need prayer right now that I completely understand why we are told to pray continually. As you know, there are a few things that I have been consistently praying for our family, and I pray over them multiple times a day, every day. God tells us to be persistent, right? So as I began my prayer time yesterday, I felt God say, "Be still". That was it...simply "Be still".

There comes a time where we all just need to sit down, shut up, and be still before God. Clear our minds and our hearts, and listen for Him to speak. If you are anything like me, that can be hard to do sometimes. But how can we expect to hear His voice when we are constantly busy trying to shrink our ever-present list of to-do's, or when our minds are cluttered by everything we have going on in our lives.

'Call to me and I will answer you. I'll tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own.'
-Jeremiah 33:3 (MSG)

God DESIRES to speak to you! And not only that, but He has some amazing things to say. He wants to speak to you about your past, present, and future circumstances. He wants to speak words of love, hope, challenge, and conviction. He wants to reveal more of Himself to you.

While God wants us to take your needs and requests before Him, we must not forget to also take the time to silence our minds (and our mouths) and listen for Him to speak. I don't know about you, but I would rather be attentive to God's whispers than to have to have Him beat me over the head trying to get me to sit still.

The Pit Of Self-Pity

Today's post is a reading from the book "Jesus Calling". Self-pity is an easy trail to go down when we are going through tough times. But in actuality, self-pity can deceive you, paralyze you, and ultimately destroy you. Choose your thoughts wisely and refuse to be ruled by your emotions.

Be on guard against the pit of self-pity. When you are weary or unwell, this demonic trap is the greatest danger you face. Don't even go near the edge of the pit. Its edges crumble easily, and before you know it, you are on your way down. It is ever so much harder to get out of that pit than to keep a safe distance from it. That is why I tell you to be on guard.

There are several ways to protect yourself from self-pity. When you are occupied with praising and thanking Me, it is impossible to feel sorry for yourself. Also, the closer you live to Me, the more distance there is between you and the pit.

Live in the light of My Presence by fixing your eyes on Me. Then you will be able to run with endurance the race that is set before you, without stumbling or falling.

Risky Faith

"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."
-Hebrews 11:1

This month is my anniversary of moving to Tennessee. I was born and raised in one place for nearly three decades. I had just quit my job, had my first child, and went from being a huge part of something to a part of nothing. To say that I was upset about moving would be an understatement. I fought God, I fought my husband, but deep down, I knew in my heart that this is where God was calling me and my family. So why my resistance? Because I was leaving everything familiar and stepping into a vast unknown.

As Christians we are to live by faith. Hard question: Are you truly living by faith if you never allow yourself to be put in a situation where you have no other choice but to trust God?

How can you ever fully experience the fullness of all God has for you if you are afraid to take a chance or give up at the first challenge? Many people are content to settle for a mediocre life because they aren't willing to risk. They aren't willing to change. They aren't willing to give up comfort and complacency for the unknown adventure. God is a God of the unknown. God is a God of risk. There are countless times in the Bible where He called people to situations where they were completely walking in faith.

Some of you will never live out your God-given calling in life and it's no one else's fault but your own. That may sound harsh, but unfortunately it is true more often than not.

Is God calling you out in faith?

Do you believe God is who He says He is?

If you answered yes, then what is keeping you from taking that step forward?

You See What You're Looking For

So over the weekend I celebrated a birthday. That means a whole new year is beginning, and honestly, I'm hoping this year is better than last. This has been a tough year in a lot of aspects and some of it, I would rather forget. But in all reality, despite the rough patches, I have a LOT to thank God for. This weekend, my husband, family, and friends spoiled me beyond belief! It was definitely one of my best birthdays. Ever. And as I sit here reflecting on the weekend, I realize all the many blessings that I have.

I think, as imperfect humans, it's a lot easier for us to naturally focus on the things in our life that aren't perfect or where we want them to be.

But no matter what is going on in your life, you have something to be thankful for.

I am a firm believer that you will see whatever it is you are looking for. If all you are looking for is the negative, then you will always see the things going wrong in your life. However, if you make an effort to look for the positive, you will see that you have a lot more to be grateful for than you may have originally thought.

Still can't seem to find anything to be thankful for? I have one. In fact, it's the best thing you have going for you...God's love. God loves you more than you will ever be loved by anyone else. And that love is constant, enduring, and unconditional. If anything else, you will always have God's love. That's a great place to start.

"Stronger"

This song has been in my head for the past few days. Take a minute, sit down, and listen to the words...let them sink into your mind and your heart. Our God is Lord over all. He has authority over everything. Whatever you are dealing with, remember that God is stronger.

Nothing? (Repost)

This is a previous post from my 31 Days Of Hope series...I felt led to repost it today.

I feel my faith is being tested. A few days ago my heart was filled with so much faith and hope, I felt I could move mountains (and one large one in particular).

But now, that faith is tested and my hope has faded. I look in front of me and that mountain is still there. In fact, it hasn't moved an inch.

I have been praying and seeking, seeking and praying, asking God to show up. I want to yell out in frustration, "NOTHING!! All this time and still NOTHING!!"

But yet in my spirit, instead of an exclamation point at the end, I hear myself say, "Nothing?" I'm not so sure that's the reality of it.

Deep down in this time of darkness, a small light remains. It isn't a flame burning brightly or even flickering. More like the small bit of orange that's left on the wick when you blow out a candle, right before it completely goes out. The winds of time and life have blown on my candle of hope so much over the past year that the flame of faith is almost out. But despite that, I can't dismiss that small certainty that knows Who my God is.

He is a God who can change things in a moment. He is a God who is faithful, even when I am faithless. He is a God who keeps His promises. He is a God who is always there. As much as my emotions want to scream NOTHING!, my heart just doesn't believe it.

"God brings death and God brings life, brings down to the grave and raises up. God brings poverty and God brings wealth; he lowers, he also lifts up. He puts poor people on their feet again; he rekindles burned-out lives with fresh hope..." 1 Samuel 2:6-9 (The Message)

I don't see my mountain moving, but I have to know that God is moving.

For All The Single Ladies

So Valentine's Day was a few days ago and it got me thinking back on my pre-marriage Valentine's. Some good, some not so much. One that sticks out is the one I got dumped. It was amazing (note the sarcasm). The story actually is much worse than simply getting dumped, but I will spare you the details. I remember at the time thinking, "This is the worst Valentine's Day ever." But actually, it turned out to be one of the best Valentine's Days ever.

You see, this guy was definitely not the right one for me. Other people told me and I knew it. Deep down I knew that I was settling for less than God's best for me. But for some reason, I kept holding on. It took an ugly situation for God to finally get me to see things as they really were.

Looking back, I am so grateful that relationship ended. I wasn't treated right, I wasn't respected, I wasn't valued. And even though he told me otherwise, I wasn't loved.

Love is deeper than pretty words or surface actions. If you think that being in a bad relationship is better than being "lonely" and single, you are so wrong. Been there done that. There is a line from a movie that goes something like this, "You are everything I never knew I always wanted." That is exactly how I feel about my husband. Don't settle for what you think you want. Wait on God who knows what you need. Yes, waiting is hard, but you can do it and it is worth it. You are a daughter of the King of Kings...believe it. Live it!

Change Your View

When we trust our lives to the hand and pen of an unseen but ever-present God, He will write our lives into His story and every last one of them will turn out to be a great read. With a grand ending. And not just in spite of those catastrophes. Often because of them. Don't just wait and see. Live and see.
-Beth Moore

Trials stink. No one likes to go through hard times. But they are a part of life. So what if we changed how we viewed them?

The Bible tells us many times to rejoice in our sufferings (Romans 5:3), to be joyful in trials (James 1:2). Hard to do? Yes. Impossible to do? No. Why? Because it is a choice.

We must choose to not give in to our doubts and emotions.

We must choose to walk forward with a joyful attitude instead of a complaining one.

We must choose to trust God.

We must choose to see beyond the "what is" to the "what could be", all the while remembering that God has a purpose for our life and that, if we are seeking Him and following in obedience, even the hardest times we face will be worked out for our benefit (Romans 8:28).

Not Forgotten

Ok, this is not going to be a typical post. As I sat down to write, I felt so strongly that God wanted to simply say one thing:
I have not forgotten you.
God sees you. God knows what you are going through. Just because you don't see things happening doesn't mean that God is not there. He is! And He loves you.

Life Happens - Repost from Caleb Magnino

Today's post is from Caleb Magnino. You can check out his website at calebmagnino.com.
It's a great reminder about the importance of perspective and not letting your problems cloud your vision.

Not gonna lie…today was a tough day. Honestly a terrible start to a week. There is room in a blog for transparency... right?! I would hope so.

We have all been where I am today... discouraged, frustrated, irritated, angry, and stressed out. We have all felt the pressure of life, work, family, personal goals, and the like pressing in on us. For me, that day was today. It started with my laptop (that is my world for connectivity and all things work related) having another hard drive issue that literally has taken me the last 24 hours to fix, couple that with life decisions that need to be made, parenting dilemmas, personal unrest at seemingly nothing happening as I would desire and BAM! you have my day.

Been there? Yeah... I thought so.

But here is the beauty of it: Christ is still good. Christ is still sovereign. He is still on the throne.

I had to constantly remind myself of that today I saw deadlines passing while waiting for my laptop to cooperate. I have to be mindful of that when my 4 year old daughter takes on the attitude of a 16 year old defiant teenager, I must keep that ever in front of me when life seems to put me between a tough spot and a tougher spot.

Perspective is everything.

As I have been sitting here waiting for all my updates to install so I can start working for the day, now that it is 11:20PM, I came across this post by David Platt, author of Radical. It was exactly what I needed to hear.

“@plattdavid: Christian, absolutely nothing can touch you today apart from the sovereign hand of a God who wills your good & His glory.”

I needed to hear that. I believe that some of you need to hear that. In the midst of being exceptional creatives and diligent leaders, we find ourselves walking through tough stuff of life. Be encouraged. Rest in Him.

But now, this is what the LORD says-
He who created you, Jacob,
He who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name;
you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;"
-Isaiah 43:1-3

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
-Psalm 46:10

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
-2 Corinthians 4:8-9

One Thing You Can't Lose

Everyone who has lost something at some point in your life, please raise your hand. If your hand is not raised, you are either extremely fortunate or lying. I'm betting on the second.

We have all experienced a loss of some kind...a job, a marriage, a loved one, a dream. Loss is painful and confusing. The struggle to cope and move forward is hard. But there is one thing you can be sure of--you can never lose God. He will always be there with you and for you.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified... for the LORD your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.
-Deuteronomy 31:6

As I write this post, I am praying for everyone that reads this who is hurting. I pray that God's peace would triumph over your confusion. That His hope would transcend your pain. Loss is inevitable. But so is the love and grace of God.

Facing Fear

`Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you; Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.'
-Isaiah 41:10

I have noticed something about my kids...they are a lot more confident and brave when they know I am right there with them. For example, my daughter is typically pretty outgoing, but occasionally she can feel a bit overwhelmed at a situation. During those times she will say to me, "Mommy, you come with me." So I will take her by the hand and we will go on and face whatever it is together.
“Each time we face our fear, we gain strength, courage, and confidence in the doing.”
Are you feeling overwhelmed at a situation you are facing? Do you feel scared, unsure, or anxious? Know that God is right there with you. Reach up and grab the hand of your heavenly Father and let Him lead you forward in strength and confidence, step by step by step.

Praying God's Word - Help Me To Believe

Today's post is from Beth Moore's book, "Praying God's Word Day By Day". If you have been praying for something but haven't seen it come to fruition, let this be your prayer today...

If you dare to believe and don't get your miracle, God has a greater one planned. Stay tuned.

Jesus, You told Your close followers, who were taught how to seek the Father's heart, that whatever they asked for in prayer they were to believe they received it and it would be theirs (Mark 11:24). O Father, help me to know Your heart intimately so that I'll know how to pray, what to pray, and believe in advance that I will receive it!

Please help me to not be foolish and slow of heart (Luke 24:25). If You speak to me regarding earthly things and I do not believe, how then will I believe when You speak of heavenly things? (John 13:12)

Help me to believe You here and now and not just in things concerning heaven. You are God of heaven and earth!
